Sore throat & Tonsillitis

Sore throats

Sore throats are very common. The vast majority are viral, and resolve after about 1 week.

Feel free to use over the counter lozenges and salt gargles, as well as ensuring you are drinking plenty. Please do make contact if symptoms seem severe or are not resolving after 1 week.

Tonsillitis

This is a common condition and is usually viral. Therefore, antibiotics will not help.

Times when antibiotics may help are:

  • If the sore throat is associated with a high temperature
  • If there is pus on the tonsils
  • If the lymph nodes around your neck are swollen
  • If you do not have a cough (a cough is suggestive of a viral infection)

If you are feeling unwell, or your sore throat is lasting over a week please do get in touch via PATCHS.
