Find my NHS number

An NHS number is a 10-digit number, like 485 777 3456.

Your NHS number is unique to you. It helps healthcare staff and service providers identify you correctly and match your details to your health records.

You do not need your NHS number to use NHS services.

You should have an NHS number if you registered for NHS care in England, Wales or the Isle of Man.

How to find your NHS number

  • You can use the following online service to find your NHS number: Find your NHS number – NHS (www.nhs.uk)
  • The NHS App can tell you your NHS number (you’ll need to register if you have not used it before).
  • Your NHS number can also be found on any letter from the NHS like a prescription or appointment letter.
  • There is also an option to pop in to your local GP surgery and ask a receptionist, but you may be asked to show a passport, driving licence or some other proof of identity, to protect your privacy.
