Get tested in Know Your Numbers! Week

We’re supporting Blood Pressure UK’s Know Your Numbers! week which runs from 5-11 September 2022.

The theme of this year’s campaign is encouraging people to test their own blood pressure with a home blood pressure machine. However, volunteers from Middlewood’s Patient Participation Groups and the local area have received training from the NHS Innovation Agency to take blood pressure readings and to use portable ECG (electrocardiogram) devices where a 30-second ‘finger-tip’ test can help identify people who may suffer from AF – atrial fibrillation – an irregular heartbeat which can lead to a serious stroke.

AF is a silent killer, it can affect any age adult, is symptomless, and is one of the biggest causes of stroke, a leading cause of death and serious disability. However, once diagnosed, it’s easily treated. Likewise, high blood pressure is not usually something that you can feel or notice. But if untreated, it increases your risk of serious problems such as heart attacks and strokes.

The volunteers will be offering the opportunity for members of  the public to be tested at the following sessions in Know Your Numbers! Week:

Wednesday 7th September

Disley Community Centre – 10.30am – 12 noon

Bridgend Centre, Bollington – 10am – 12 noon

Poynton Civic Centre – 11am – 3pm

Friday 9th September

Clay Cafe, Poynton Baptist Church, Park Lane, Poynton  10.30am – 12.30pm

Saturday 10th September

Disley Community Centre – 10.30am – 12 noon

Farmers Arms, Park Lane, Poynton – 10am – 3pm

Tricia Thomson of the Middlewood Partnership Patient Participation Group, who organised the training and who has co-ordinated the sessions and volunteers said,

“Now we’ve received the Happy Heart training, we’ll be out and about in the community raising awareness of how simple testing can save lives. Please do come for your free check and get to know your numbers! We have sessions in Bollington, Disley and Poynton”

This is just one example of the many facets of being a volunteer in your local GP practice Patient Participation Forum. To find out more and about how you could get involved, please visit the Middlewood Partnership website at www.middlewoodpartnership.co.uk/ppg

You can find more information about blood pressure and AF on our website or on the Cheshire and Merseyside Happy Heart site.

Thanks to the volunteers for all your time and commitment and to Poynton Rotary who are supporting the session at Poynton on Saturday.
