6-8 Week Mother and Baby Checks

What is the 6-8 Week Mother and Baby Checks Service?

This service offers a comprehensive check-up for both mother and baby, approximately six to eight weeks after birth. The appointment ensures both mother and baby are recovering well, and provides an opportunity to address any concerns you may have.

Who is this service for?

This service is for mothers and their babies who are between 6-8 weeks old. The baby’s father or another family member is welcome to attend the appointment as well.

How do I access this service?

Your newborn must be registered with Middlewood. The baby check will be automatically scheduled for 6-8 weeks after birth.

Where is the service provided?

Our mother and baby check service is delivered all four of The Middlewood Partnership surgeries:

  • Bollington Medical Centre
  • Mcilvride Medical Practice
  • Priorslegh Medical Centre
  • The Schoolhouse Surgery

Who will I see for the appointment?

You will be seen by one of our experienced GPs at your usual base surgery. Our team is dedicated to ensuring that both you and your baby receive the best possible care.

What can I expect to happen?

The appointment will be divided into two parts:

  • Mother: The GP will ask about the birth, how you are healing, and focus on mental health. There will be time to discuss future contraception and cervical screening. Blood pressure and any scars can be checked if needed.
  • Baby: The GP will perform a full physical examination, checking the baby’s eyes, face, limbs, heart, lungs, and hips. The baby will be weighed and this will be recorded in your child’s Red Book.

The GP may also signpost you to services such as hospital referrals, breastfeeding support, or children’s centres. You will also have the chance to discuss any concerns, including safe sleeping.

How long can I expect to wait?

The appointment should take place when the baby is between 6-8 weeks old; there is not usually a delay when booking an appointment for a baby check.

How long is the appointment?

The appointment will last approximately 40-minutes. This allows enough time to carefully review both mother and baby, ensuring a full physical examination for the baby and a comprehensive discussion about the mother’s health and wellbeing. If there are additional concerns, this time will also be used to make any necessary referrals or provide advice.
